Peer learning or peer pressure?

Gone are the days when education, competition, and learning were a part of lives and not the whole life. In earlier days, peer learning was all about the positive assimilation of knowledge from peers and surroundings. Life was not a game of road rash. It was like Mario. Everyone walked down their own set of hurdles in life and overcame them. Rat race, brutal competition, exams, winning, and losing didn’t make our parents and their parents clench their sphincters.

Trudging the rungs of the ladder of advancement, we are now exposed to gargantuan information. Generation Z is being hammered in every possible way to grasp that knowledge, assimilate it, and indulge in fierce competition. Dare you slow down your pace! The shift has been so intangible that more than external forces, internal realizations about being the best have dawned upon the students of our generation. Life is no more about competition being a part of life, instead, we sometimes try to live a little amidst the enduring and deadly competition. So much is expected from young minds that they are forged to be the best. In the process, some of these minds start wobbling. Feeling intimidated amidst a huge crowd marching past, one can’t afford to catch one breath even for some time. I question, what is this growth?

Peer learning is a process of learning and developing each other’s concepts. It is a cognitive process that escalates the growth of the mind. On the contrary, peer pressure is the negative influence of peers on one’s mental and emotional capabilities. The National Crime Records Bureau study shows that in India, a student commits suicide every 55 minutes. “Live a little every day, Ek hi Zindagi Mili hai (You have got only one life).” This was the last line of an eight-page suicide note of a postgraduate student of IIT, Hyderabad.

While researching to write this blog, I came across the fact that there is a thin line of difference between healthy growth and spooky growth. The kind of obnoxious pressure that today’s minds carry is alarming. In 2020, students’ suicide due to peer pressure spiked to 8.2% which is more than the farmers’ suicide rate of 7.4%. Parents’ support and benevolence take a back seat when peer pressure, which is the driver is asphyxiating.

I’m sorry. All the noise in my head and the hatred for myself is maddening.

an excerpt from kriti tripathi’s suicide note.

When success is celebrated, failure should also be celebrated, only then can peer learning strive. When I came for post-graduation, on the very first day we were told that there’s no space for mediocrity, our college strives for excellence. This left me shellshocked. Why is mediocrity not celebrated? Why is a failure not celebrated? This change in our connotations of success has put success in a bad light. I still haven’t found answers on how to address the vacuum that this eerie growth creates. We have to give the space to let students enhance their flexibility through ‘learning by doing.’ If we deliberately try to stretch the elastic of their capabilities, it’ll eventually break one day and that’ll be the end of a learner.
