Upon delving deep into the figures, I came to know that America alone produces 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper, half of which lands up as waste.

Furoshiki

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of wrapping gifts, and valuable goods in fabric instead of using wrapping papers. Furoshiki is made up of two words, Furo which means to Bath, and Shiki which means to spread. The history of furoshiki dates back to the Muromachi period (1136-1573). During this period there was a Shogun named Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who had a large bathhouse and invited the feudal lords to relax and use this facility. These feudal lords wrapped their Kimonos in the furoshiki cloth that would differentiate their clothes from others’. The furoshiki cloth was further decorated with emblems and personalized crests for identification. This cloth was also used as a fabric on which the people stood to dry themselves, hence the name furoshiki (bath spread).

Soon after this, the practice gathered popularity in Japan, and people attached an emotional value to the art of furoshiki by using beautiful fabrics for gifting and storing valuable items. Furoshiki refers to both the art and the fabric used to wrap gifts.

Furoshiki in India

India is a land of festivals. The exchange of gifts acts as an emotional and personal conduit of gesture in these festivals. However, Indians are still unenthusiastic about switching to more idiosyncratic ways of gifting and wrapping. Unknowingly, Indians have been using furoshiki for many years. In India, when people give their clothes to the laundry, they tie them in a cloth to differentiate their clothes from others’.

Economical

There’s no need for you to purchase new fabrics for gift wrapping. All you need is perfect ideation. Pick any beautiful but old fabric that you don’t use anymore to decorate gifts for your loved ones.

The next day, I bid a farewell to both the family and the pile of wrinkled gift papers with a ‘return gift’ wrapped in another colorful plastic paper. I sighed in dismay.
